ImageLast year I worked at a San Francisco eatery called Globe. The restaurant’s giant boxy Muzak receiver sat below the bar and could only be accessed by a single remote control. The remote’s buttons only responded to brutal mashing because they had become sticky due to layers of dried, spilled alcohol. Though my boss Mary insisted that lunch only feature the smooth sounds of light jazz, she was hardly ever around, leaving me in total control of the stereo. I preferred an 80’s new wave station that didn’t quite fit the feel of the restaurant or it’s power-lunch clientele but the songs were upbeat and while working the music let me forget how terribly unsatisfying my job was.
