In 1981, Fisher Price released a brown and beige children’s tape recorder with a built-in microphone. This portable device was sold with a companion tape entitled ‘Discover a World of Sounds’. On this cassette was a 15-minute long radio show demonstrating the player’s simple recording features. The show’s announcer encouraged kids to throw themselves wholeheartedly into a world of endless possibilities in recorded sounds. Twenty-odd years later, one of those kids is still full of ideas and has created this website to take the original ‘Discover a World of Sounds’ concept out of analog and into the digital realm. 'Discover a World of Sounds' hosts an eclectic selection of Internet radio shows that mix popular music with interviews, spoken word, and found media. Many of the shows attempt to make a connection between popular music and personal experience. Some shows are pop retrospectives, some tell a story, and others exist merely to introduce listeners to new music. Dupuy is the musical mastermind behind Discover A World of Sounds. He is a pop music fanatic and works various jobs in San Francisco’s drag underworld that include DJ’ing, sound editing, performing, and stage-managing. He is part of the Midnight Mass collective and works on stage shows for Peaches Christ’s popular midnight movie series, Midnight Mass along with its sister series, The Late Night Picture Show. Occasionally, he can be found working behind-the-scenes at San Francisco’s legendary drag club Trannyshack.Musically, Dupuy is intrigued with the idea of using songs to evoke emotion and jog memory. His ‘World of Sounds’ contains some of the most melodic and quirky music around. |
