Discover a World of Sounds 01 is the first show in a new series I’ll be doing to replace Mixtape Radio. This is yet another mix of offbeat storytelling, pop music, sound effects, and found audio. In returning to create these shows, I’ve begun to use analog tape recordings as source material. It plays a huge part of this first show including songs pulled from tape, reel-to-reel noise, and answering machine clips. Answering machine bits will now become a permanent part of Discover a World of Sounds shows. Each ‘found’ tape is a glimpse into the life of a complete stranger and I find it endlessly fascinating. The first answering machine clip that you’ll hear in this show comes from a Seattle-based compilation A Four Course Meal of Found Sound and it’s thrift store gold: a machine-taped conversation that is pure aural saccharin. Every answering clip you hear thereafter will be one of my own finds. There is a great feeling of immediacy that comes with finding these tapes since tape-based messages machines are a thing of the past and are all but extinct. On this episode you’ll hear me act out a scene from Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest with the legendary Vincent Price. He plays Jack and I play Algernon. Please excuse my terribly queer British accent and ignore the fact that radios and game shows didn’t exist in Victorian times. Its all a mere excuse to have Vincent Price read the most poetic recipe for Trifle cake ever.
You’ll also hear a little of famed hypnotist Dr. Michael Dean who not only performed pop music in his act, but he also had a doctorate in philosophy. His hypnosis show was very popular at the Gaslight Supper Club in San Diego during the 1960’s. So much so that rival hypnotist, Ronald Dante, once had a hit put out on him. Hypnotism is seriously weird shit. Several years ago at Six Flags, I watched a hypnotist convince a friend of mine that she was Mrs. Piggy while a stranger sitting next to her was Kermit the Frog. Luckily she was brought back to consciousness before they started going at it. This summer I’ll also be working on a pre-recorded stage show for Midnight Mass’ Poltergeist screening and I'll also be DJing an in-store event for Amoeba Music on June 27th. If you’re in the neighborhood please stop by, listen to some great music, and take some home with you. |
