| Dupuy interviewed by Peaches Christ |
![]() Hello Dupuy! Hello Peaches! OK, so the first most obvious question has to be, what is Discover a World of Sounds? Discover a World of Sounds is a music website featuring personal short stories combined with radio mix tape shows that pull from various media sources. The shows will feature music meaningful to me, as well as written short stories related to the music selections. I’ll also include relevant sound-clips, music discussions, and event coverage. Some of the themed shows will be straightforward retrospectives on pop music and others will be stories mixed with various sources of media. Each show will follow it’s own pattern and hopefully prove to be an entertaining new way to enjoy music on the Internet. Sounds fierce! So tell me, what is the inspiration for Discover a World of Sounds? Last year when I was visiting my parents in Baton Rouge I started digging through a box filled with my old cassette tapes and I picked out a few to take home with me. Going through the tapes I found strange mixes I had made in junior high and two tapes containing audio clips of my friend Chris and I playing around with the Fisher Price Tape recorder when we were 9 years old. I became excited listening to some of the old recordings and decided I would attempt to revisit some of these old mix tape concepts through podcasting. When I sat down and started planning this out I realized I had a never-ending stream of shows I could produce. Also, I regularly read a number of music sites and what’s surprising is the repetitiveness of music facts. For instance, you can do a search for an album or a particular song on the Internet and find the same information about that music written over and over again on various sites. Plus, so many music sites talk about obscure records and give history and criticism but what is rarely discussed is the listener’s personal feelings towards the music. I’m intrigued with the idea of using music to tell a story and to evoke emotion and jog memories. Sounds ambitious! What sort of music can we expect to hear on your show? You'll hear music that I love and songs and sounds that I may have just recently discovered. With that said, I think my taste in music runs through a fairly wide spectrum. If I had to narrow the music down to a commonality I would have to say I'm a sucker for melody, quirky sounds, and smart production. I won't play you music in order to reaffirm my own taste in music. The purpose of Discover a World of Sounds is to tell various stories through music and also to make connections between popular music and personal experience. Will you host the shows exclusively or will you involve other guests? You know... if you're interested in having an international drag superstar appear- (Dupuy interrupting) Actually I have drag superstar Cookie Dough sitting in for a retrospective on Queen. Also, music aficionados Brad Schelden and Sarah Rogers will be co-hosting several shows with me at some point. Plus the ghost of Fred Rogers will be sitting in for me on a show next year called ‘Mr. Rogers Presents’. He’s of no relation to Sarah though. I love ghosts! So how frequently will you be putting out these shows? A new show will be posted once a month. Wow, you’re tireless. So tell me a little bit about yourself Dupuy? I’m a film and music geek and I’ve collected records for as long as I can remember. I grew up in southern Louisiana and spent several years attending film school in Chicago. I moved to San Francisco two years ago and I definitely connect with the city. I love the various neighborhoods here because they all have such definitively different personalities. It’s like these separate little worlds. Everyone outside of the city seems to have strange misconceptions about San Francisco. We live in a bubble here. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I think I’m very much a product of my southern upbringing but I’ve definitely gone through my own Californication. When grocery shopping now, I only buy locally grown produce. And then you deep-fry it! Speaking of being from the south, I often tell people that you are a victim of Hurricane Katrina and that's how you came to live in San Francisco. People sometimes accuse me of exaggerating and altering stories for dramatic affect. I would like you to set the record 'straight'. Yes, I lived above a grocery store in Uptown New Orleans. My life was kind of quiet and dull until the hurricane season that year. The weather in New Orleans that entire summer was really spooky. You could feel something in the air. So there. I do not lie. You don’t lie? Ok, how old are you? 23. But this interview is not about me dear. Where did the title of your show come from? The cassette tape that came along with the Fisher Price Tape recorder featured a 15-minute radio show demonstrating the players recording features. The name of the show was Discover a World of Sounds. I took the name because I thought it sounded perfect for the concept of the mix tape shows. Of course, 'a world of sounds’ is actually 'my world of sounds’. It’s all very narcissistic. What is your favorite record? That’s a really hard question to answer and I think that if I did have a really straightforward answer I wouldn’t be able to do these shows. I’m scatterbrained so I have a new favorite record every week. So what is this weeks? ‘The Official Album of Epcot Center’. Speaking of educational entertainment, what will you be doing to help me out with my upcoming 10th Annual Season of Midnight Mass (my midnight movie series)? Well, I think my duties to the show will be pretty much the same as last years: compiling music sets to be played while the audience is filing into the theater, various stage hand work, chauffeuring special guests, and minimal performing. I’m also writing your pre-show for Flash Gordon, which I’m really looking forward to. Do you listen to any podcasts and if so which do you listen to? No, not yet. I'm keeping my ears open though. What upcoming shows can we expect? I have a lot of shows planned. I’ll name a few… a show featuring quirky and bizarre country music, a show devoted to telephones, an ode to forest creatures, a Latin freestyle retrospective, a tribute to robots, a satire on celebrity gossip, and on and on and on...
